Welcome from the Base Commander
Welcome to the website of the South Florida Base of the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. The primary goal of this base is to establish a meeting place to promote a camaraderie between qualified submariners, discuss current events and share sea stories of interest. Our present roster numbers 45 and is growing at a steady rate. We meet on the second Saturday of each month . Feel free to contact us at any of the numbers listed in the “About Us“ section of this website for more information.
OUR CREED: "To perpetuate the memory of our shipmates who have given their lives in the pursuit of their duties while serving their country. That their dedication, deeds and supreme sacrifice be a constant source of motivation toward greater accomplishments. Pledge loyalty and patriotism to the United States Government." HISTORY The UNITED STATES SUBMARINE VETERANS INC. was founded in 1965 by a group of U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II. They shared a belief in the need for an organization open to all submariners, from the very beginning of the Submarine Service through to the present and into the future - and not limited to just those who served so ably on Submarines in WW2. They also wanted to insure that those lost in the line of duty on US Submarines will never be forgotten, and to provide a way for veteran Submariners to share camaraderie and pass on the collective memory of the United States Navy Submarine force to future generations.
The Groton base started immediately and held meetings at the K of C in Groton. The attendance at these meetings was between 60-75 members. Joe Negri was elected the first state commander and Dick Higman was the first base commander. About a year later it was determined that they needed their own building and it was voted to sell raffle tickets (1000 tickets at $10 each) for a gold Cadillac to raise the money for the down payment on the present home at 40 School Street. The base building on School Street became a reality in 1966. Due to the fact that the Groton USSVI/Base was incorporated within the state of Connecticut and they had their own building, it was voted that Groton become the National Headquarters of USSVI.

FLASH-01: Hurricane Ike call For Assistance
Submitted by: Pat Householder Natl Cdr on 9/16/2008
---------------------------------------------------------
Shipmates,
In the recent hurricane that devastated Galveston, TX, clobbered Houston and
wrecked the gulf coast communities in that area, we have shipmates who have
lost all or substantially everything.
We know of at least two members in this situation and there may be more we
have yet to hear about. As you know, communications in that area are
difficult right now.
Your Brotherhood Fund of the Subvet Charitable Foundation will immediately
provide $ 500.00 ea in relief funds to these two shipmates as soon as we can
make contact with them, and if needed we will fund match another $ 500.00 ea
for these shipmates.
This is an appeal to YOU and ALL USSVI shipmates to contribute to helping
our gulf coast shipmates in distress.
Please send your contribution marked for "USSVCF/Disaster Relief" to
BASE COMMANDER Dallas Base
Wayne Standerfer
1303 Bow Creek Drive
Duncanville, Texas 75116
or directly to:
USSV Charitable Foundation
Attn: Brotherhood/Disaster Relief Fund
